This is the way I see it. A setting with 3 options:
1. Show shortedURLs (with hover expanded) [Default]
2. Show expanded URLs (with hover title if available)
3. Do nothing
http://snick.me has this information on their API, plus the page title, description and keywords. Should use information like that to improve the interface
You can go one-step further with r.im short urls and use the r.im API to return the long URL as a tooltip or <a href> title when you hover over the short URL. Also helps that at 14 characters, r.im URLs are the shortest on the planet.
http://iKr.me shortening service has that built in. Just append a minus sign and for example instead of http://iKr.me/a use http://iKr.me/a- and it will SHOW you where it leads...

A very nice feature available on Spaz that I miss on Twhirl.

This API works well in the Firefox LongURL Mobile Expander Ad-on. We should have the same protection in Twirl. http://longurl.org/api

@pakitus just ask for HEAD until you don't get a 30x
@jose.junior yes, as a hover (otherwise it would require more space for full URL in tweet)

I'd like to see something similar to the Firefox addon "bit.ly preview" which works in the browser.

Great idea! shortened urls are scary
pakitus
Great idea, the only problem is how to parse the original url.

Maybe as a tooltip when you hover over the link?
